Marble veneering and the construction of the marble floor of the «Octagon» of Galerius’ palace complex in Thessaloniki

Galerius Maximianus’ palace complex in Thessaloniki was built at the beginning of the 4th century AD in the city’s eastern section. One of its most significant buildings is known as the Octagon, which is found in the Southwest section of the archaeological site in Navarinou Square. The masonry in the interior of the building was decorated with marble, while the floor consisted of marble paving slabs and tiles, which were organized in geometrical patterns. For the construction of the floor almost all the types of marble available during late antiquity in Greece and Egypt were used.A detailed outline and documentation of the slabs and tiles revealed significant data on the way the floor was constructed during antiquity. In addition, corresponding information was derived from the study of the extant sections of the marble veneering, which relates to the techniques of how the marble slabs and tiles were placed, the plaster of the substratum, as well as the design of the decor.
