A neolithic settlement at Revenia near Korinos

Abstract:
In 2002, 2003, and 2004 an extensive settlement was excavated at Revenia, west of Korino in northern Pieria. The pottery dates it to the Early Neolithic period. The excavation covered an area of some 850 m2, while the total area of the settlement is estimated at 4 ha.The architectural remains consist chiefly of: 1) 86 pits hewn out of the bedrock, which are believed to have been underground or semi-underground parts of houses or storage spaces; and 2) a group of 28 post-holes, which have been identified as part of the foundations of the walls of a rectangular dwelling with more than one room. The portable finds were abundant in all categories. On the basis of the shapes and the decoration of the pottery, we have detected two phases of the settlement, in the earlier of which the vessels are simpler in shape and usually have thick walls. Most numerous are the monochrome, well burnished vessels with or without handles, though there are also a few with barbotine decoration. There are no painted wares from this phase. These categories continue into the next phase, but the walls are thinner and the shapes bolder, and there is a large proportion of painted ware.
