Comments on the use of space on the outskirts of the ancient city at Neos Skopos

Abstract:
In the last three years, four plots of land have been investigated at Neos Skopos, Serres prefecture, in connection with applications for building permits. The data gleaned from the rescue excavations and the trial trenches offer the first information about the use and organisation of the space on the outskirts of the residential part of the ancient city which has recently been identified as the ancient Berge. The two plots directly to the north yielded exclusively inhumation and jar burials of infants of the 4th century BC, as also refuse pits or accumulations of refuse of diverse content and rich in pottery, chiefly of the Hellenistic period, but also with some interesting examples of Archaic pottery. The third plot, north-east of the settlement, yielded a considerable part of the cemetery, with burials of the Archaic, Hellenistic, and Roman periods; while the fourth plot, which lies some distance from the ancient settlement, had burials of the 6th and early 5th century BC.
