Abstract:
In the course of a 13-month project, the boundary of the Neolithic settlement at Thermi, Thessaloniki prefecture, was redefined. The total area of the site that was investigated is close to 6 ha. An initial record was made of the archaeological fill. The architectural structures, pits, and paved areas contained a large number of finds of the Middle and Late Neolithic (the second half of the 6th millennium BC). On the basis of the pottery assemblages it was possible to determine the successive chronological phases of the various architectural structures; while the rest of the finds made it possible to distinguish spaces for special purposes around the domestic spaces.Undoubtedly, the nature of the settlement is directly linked with the production of flake tools from pyritic limonite and quartz. This is attested throughout the existence of the settlement, despite its small size in comparison with nearby settlements like Vassilika.
