Abstract:
A Late Bronze Age cemetery has been located at Kokkina Vrahia near Faia Petra in the municipality of Sidirokastro. It lies on a plateau about 1 km SW of the village, but the settlement to which the cemetery belonged has not yet been located. There are no tumuli, and the graves are not visible on the surface. Some of them have collapsed into the deep ravine which forms the E boundary of the site. Two rectangular sepulchral enclosures and part of a third were investigated. The dead were buried in the levelled interior of the enclosures, moving aside the bones from previous burials, and were accompanied by a very small number of metal grave goods, mainly bronze jewellery and weapons, and earthenware vessels. Animal bones, burnt remains, and a stone runnel which was found at the base of one side of one of the enclosures are connected with funeral rituals. All the pottery, four-handled amphoras and large phiales, are decorated with deep incisions filled in with white or yellow material, making it typical Late Bronze Age pottery from eastern and central Macedonia (LHIIIb and LHIIIc).
