Excavation of the early bronze age settlement by the Balkan export factory

Abstract:
In the 2nd half of 2000, a rescue excavation was carried out on an Early Bronze Age site within the grounds of the Balkan Export factory. The site is just 1 km from the Anhialos table. It is a low mound, which was inhabited only in this period. The area which was investigated covers 0.13 ha, and most of the earthfill had already been destroyed. So the excavation was essentially limited to the excavation of the settlement's earliest 2 building phases. Parts of rectangular houses were uncovered, the walls of which were difficult to trace and were located mainly thanks to the large, well-made post-holes, which also reflect the buildings' high standard of construction. The destruction layer which covered most of the excavation yielded a large number of vessels and other finds, among which it is worth mentioning the large number of anchor-shaped objects, which in this case are identifiable as loom-weights.The buildings are part of a wider urban fabric with a concentrated population. The standard of construction and the dimensions of the walls, together with constant reconstruction both of the buildings and of the hearths on more or less the same site, indicate the stability of the settlement. The finds, for their part, reflect its prosperity. On the basis of the pottery, which does not represent the repertory of shapes common in the early part of the Early Bronze Age, we date both construction phases to the middle of that period, around the middle of the 3rd millennium.
