Abstract:
The archaeological investigations in the Agora in Pella in 1998 and 1999 focused on the S part, where exploratory sections were dug in the S stoa and areas to the S of it in order to clarify archaeological phases under the floors of the building and to prepare the rooms for conservation and partial restoration. One group of rooms was restored, and hoards of copper and gold coins were found under the floors. This part of the Agora was found to have been built on a cemetery of the late 5th and early 4th century BC. Inhumation burials and a few jar burials and cremations were found in tumuli which had been destroyed by the Agora complex, some of them marked by grave pillars. The archaeological remains of the Archive were carefully cleaned so that a detailed architectural plan could be made of its architectural members, which were then recorded and drawn in order to restore them on paper and present a proposal for their final conservation and display. Investigations here established the presence of an entrance from the road to the W of the building, and a bronze door fitting in the form of a satyr was found next to the entrance. The fill in the road to the W of the Agora complex yielded a stamped handle from a pointed amphora bearing the ethnic ΠΌδ/ναί[ων, this being, as far as I know, the first evidence of the existence of a pointed-amphora workshop in Pydna. Limited investigations were also carried out in the e thoroughfare (where a pottery furnace full of figurines had already been found), and these located a paved area and the access points to the water-supply system. Limited work at the NE entrance to the complex was connected with the restoration proposal for this area. The Chamber of the Politarchs was also cleared after parts of a marble herm of a bearded Herakles were found there. Lastly, a considerable proportion of the excavational effort was devoted to checking all the finds from the Agora and moving them to new, organised storerooms. It will now be possible to demolish the older structures that have been distorting part of the archaeological site.
