Abstract:
A review of the rescue excavations conducted over the past 30 years by the 9th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities has yielded sporadic but valuable evidence that enriches our knowledge of the Byzantine city’s archaeological map and topography. This evidence concerns the rampart and one of its closed gates, excavated on a building lot on Filikis Etaireias/Tsimiski Streets, the existence of the Early Christian wall in part of the northwest fortifications, which up to now had been considered unwalled (area of Eurymedon Street), the city’s grid plan, the shape of the decumanus of Aghiou Dimitriou Street, and the proposal to restore the villa on Aiolou Street. In my opinion, this villa is connected with the residence of the eparch (governor) of Thessaloniki, by virtue of the subject-matter of its triclinium mosaic floor, which depicts the sun, the zodiac cycle, and personifications of the months and winds. Rescue excavations have also contributed to identifying more than 60 sites of Byzantine monasteries and ecclesiastic structures, and to the discovery of the location of pottery workshops both inside the wall (Lot at 30A Melenikou Street) as well as outside it (YMCA lot and 48 Gian- nitson Street).
