Abstract:
Excavations on the hill of Agios Athanassios in Velestino, which is next to the so-called Acropolis of Pherai, have shown that on this hill the course of the wall of Pherai differs in some significant details from the hypothetical reconstructions of F. Stählin, Y. Béquignon and E. Kirsten, which were based only on the few surface remains of the fortification. In the stretch of wall on the southern flank of the hill a gateway was found, three meters wide and protected by a large tower. It was ascertained that a further five towers, placed at roughly 30 m. intervals, reinforced the wall between the gateway and the church of thePanagia, that is along the west and north slopes of the hill. These new discoveries, considered in connexion with the exceptional strategic position of the Agios Athanassios hill, lead us to conclude that this height, too, was included within the acropolis of classical Pherai.Stratigraphical investigations between the acropolis of Pherai and the spring of Hypereia, an area which today is covered by the buildings of Velestino, have revealed levels dating from the Early Bronze Age through to the Late Hellenistic period. The deposits usually exceed three meters in depth; of particular note are the Middle Helladic and Mycenaean finds.
