Abstract:
The many important finds from the excavations at Pella necessitated the construction of a museum in which to exhibit them. The finds were temporarily housed in a small gallery which rapidly proved to be unsatisfactory. The community of Old Pella recently granted a suitable lot for building and the construction of a new museum is planned for 1978. In the meantime until the museum is ready, it was deemed advisable to house the museum exhibits in a small building designed as a tourist centre. This building was done over in order to increase the amount of exhibition space and the interior glass dividing walls were painted. The finds from both the old excavations and the recent excavations at Pella, as well as the stray- finds, are exhibited not in chronological order but according to category. The hunting dog, the head of Alexander, the headless rider statuette, the statue of a seated woman, Apollo Kitharodos and others are shown in the first gallery. Pottery, figurines, inscriptions and the mosaic floor with the lion hunt are displayed in the second gallery. Architectural blocks and the mosaic of Dionysos riding a panther take up the third room.Inscribed tombstones and the fragmentary marble rider, until recently in the Museum of Thessaloniki, have been arranged on the front porch.
