Abstract:
In the classical period of Thera a kind of himation, much sought after in Athens, the Theran himatia, was produced ; it was used by actors in the theatre and its peculiarity was that it resembled sheepskins. Taking the descriptions of ancient authors as a basis, it has been suggested that the weaving technique used for classical himatia was known on Thera from prehistoric times. In the wall painting of the navy the himatia which are thought to be made of sheepskins could as well be made of some other thick woven material giving the impression of a sheepskin. This technique is attested in Crete and in Mycenaean Greece where weaving was highly developed, whereas evidence for leather garments is of the scantiest. This technique may perhaps be mentioned in the Knossos tablets ; the same word which is used in classical times to describe the Theran himatia ( poikila ) is used on the tablets to for a kind of TELA. Technical details about this kind of weaving are to be learnt from the similar neo-hellenic technique for the “flokates” and for “ ve- lentzes Finally, the question of continuity after the destruction of the island should not be regarded as an insurmontableproblem since the art of weaving is one which meets primary needs and thus is unlikely to be forgotten.
