Abstract:
In a series of Byzantine ecclesiastical poems the Virgin is given the epithets “tower”, “fortress”, “defence” and “ wall”. Amongst the authors who give the Virgin such names is the Emperor of Nicaea, Theodoros II Lascaris. The text shows the relationship of these tags with the depiction of the Virgin on the walls of Constantinople on a “ hyper- pyron” struck by Michael VIII Palaio- logos, heir to Theodoros II.
