Abstract:
A systematic excavation, which is still on going, has been conducted since 1993 at the archaeological site of Palatiano, where a Macedonian city has been identified that flourished in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, and which is probably to be identified with ancient Ioron.Previous excavations in 1961, 1965-1966 and 1977 brought to light a Heroon of the late lst-early 2nd c. AD, with four statues of members of a distinguished family of the city inside it, part of an enclosure wall, walls of buildings, and a hypocaust on the east side of the hill, while Hellenistic and Roman tombs have also been located. The recent excavations revealed an enclosure wall similar to that of the Heroon, with three rooms in the west part of it, three buildings to the south and south-eastof the Heroon, and a street 2.80 m. wide, which encircles this complex and is supported on a stout retaining wall at least 3.50 m. high.On the summit of the hill has been located a polygonal enclosure wall, 96 m. long, which is divided into three parts and has an entrance passage 6-8 m. wide on its east side. Six rooms have been discovered along the south, outer side of the passage, and in its central part there are buildings that have not yet been investigated. The areas excavated are dated by the finds so far to the 1st c. BC-2nd c. AD, while in the majority of them the earliest residential phases have started to come to light, going back to the 3rd c. BC.Later burials dating from the 4th c. AD were located in these same areas.
