Abstract:
A pottery kiln was investigated to the north-west of the ancient city of Europos, which lies on the west bank of the river Axios, in the county of Kilkis. All that survives is the rectangular subterranean firing chamber and the praefumium. The floor of the combustion chamber was supported on small walls set parallel with each other and at right angles to a centralcorridor. The surviving sections are made of clay and bricks, reinforced by pieces of tile. Owing to the abandonment of the kiln, none of its products were found in situ. The only finds were two terracotta protomes of apotropaic character which were discovered in the destruction level of the cover of the praefumium.
