Abstract:
Excavations in Thebes have revealed two workshops, one in the « House of Kadmos » ( room π ) and one in the new Palace. Both were workshops for the cutting semiprecious stones and the making gold jewellery. Recently a third jewellery workshop was found in Thebes in Koropoulis property at 38 Pindarou street in the centre of the city and near the workshop of the new Palace ( 6 in plani). The important finds indicate that our workshop is part of the Palace complex of Mycenaean Thebes and co-existed with the workshop of the new Palace.Only part of the workshop could be excavated at an area 6 X 3 m. The Mycenaean stratum was well preserved at this area. In a depth of 5.50 m. immediatelybelow Byzantine levels a clear Mycenaean deposit was found, 1.50 m. deep, containing mostly LH IIIB2 sherds, but with no traces of walls. Below it another deposit about 0,30 - 0,50 m. deep was found, above the floor of the room. This represents the destruction level of the workshop. It consisted of debris, earth, burned stones and mudbrick. The lower 20cm. contained a lot of burned pottery mixed with stones and charcoal and some pieces of lead sheets. Clearly the workshop was violently destroyed by fire. Mixed with this debris was a large quantity of jewellery, tools and other objects, all with traces of burning, which are the following :1. Two-piece jewellery mould for metal rings, provided with funnel - shaped pour - channel running from the edge of the stone (fig. 1 ). The first piece is made of schist, the second of soft white stone. On side b of the second piece three shallow matrices (figs. 2 - 3 ) probably used for stamping gold leaf ( first use of this piece ).2. Tools : bronze chisel (fig. 4 ) and two bone tools for making ornaments (fig. 5 ).3. Two whetstones (fig. 6).4. Small flat stone, probably a working slab.5. Two bronze arrow - heads, solid, pyramidical (fig. 4, bottom).6. Sixteen buttons of steatite.7. Part of a spherical bead of rock-crystal. Two pieces of rock - crystal with traces of cutting, and many unworked pieces (fig. 7 ).8. Cylindrical bead of onyx.9. Faience mould or «former» for trochus - shell ornament of gold leaf.10. Hand of a large Mycenaean terracotta figurine of the type of the « goddess with raised hands » ( f i g. 8 ).The pottery found on the floor of the workshop (figs. 9 - 14) indicates that the destruction happened at LH IIIB1, probably at the end of it, in the middle of the 13th cent. B.C. This date coincides with the destruction of the other workshop of the new Palace and probably with the final destruction of the Mycenaean Palace complex in Thebes.
