Funerary inscriptions of Athenians from Potidaia

A group of grave inscriptions with Athenian names was discovered during a salvage excavation ( August 1973 ) near Potidaia in Chalkidike. They are the first inscriptions referring to Athenian origin people from this area. The evidence for dating the inscriptions in the late fifth century B.C. or in the beginning of the fourth century B.C. is not only epigraphical but it is basedalso on the finds of 27 graves which were found in the same place. The deads are related probably to Athenian citizens - cleruchs or epoikoi who colonized the place after the capitulation of Potidaia (430/429 B.C.). The existence of Nicostratus from Cyzicus cannot support a later dating ( 362 /1 B.G., the second Athenian cleruchy to Potidaia after Timotheus campaign).
