Abstract:
The Protogeometric sites marked out so far in West Thessaly are quite few, in contrast to those in the East Thessalian plain and, especially, Magnesia. This rarity, which has already been noted by the archaeologists who have studied the area (Desborough, The Greek Dark Ages, London 1972, p.214), convinced us of the need to publish the finds of two cist-graves discovered by chance in the village Fiki near Trikala.Tomb AIt contained one burial lying on the back. The funerary gifts were a bronze ring, perhaps part of another, and three kylikes. The shape of these three vases is common in Kephallenia and Achaia and has been found in Thessaly only in Exalofos, 3.5 km. from Fiki.Tomb BIt included one burial, also lying on theback, one gold spiral hair-ornament, two bronze long pins with incised decoration and four intact vases, an amphora, a pyxis, an oinochoe with cut-away neck and an open vase with two handles. We have noticed that the last two vases show similarities and influences from Macedonia (Vergina). The two graves are dated in the first half of the 10th century B.C.
