Abstract:
The recent discovery of a majestic chamber - tomb in Thebes, and more precisely on the hill of Καστέλλια opens a new chapter in the study of the glorious past of Mycenaean Thebes and of Mainland Greece. The monument was localised in a deliberate search in the Northern slope of the above mentioned hill, which is the most important of the hills which surround the Kadmeia Acropolis. The chamber ( Θάλαμος ) of the tomb is accessible by two dromoi, the main one measuring more than 23 m., the second smaller and parallel to the first one. This latter dromos, which is unique for the same tomb, leads to the Θάλαμος through a monumental entrance, which is decorated with mural paintings. Our tomb is the first example of a Greek Tomb of the Bronze Age to be decorated internally with paintings. The Θάλαμος, as well as the dromos, has huge dimensions. Its length is 10.25 m., its width 6.24 m. and its height 3.50 m. There are two large ( 0.90 m. ) Θρανία along the major part of the long sides ( East to West ) of the chamber, which are delicately decorated with papyrus flowers and spirals. At least two female figures are represented on the right face of the decorated entrance, as one enters it from the chamber. This is only a provisional report about the Tomb, of which the excavation is still in progress. In a future account I will give more accurate descriptions about the Tomb, its finds, and its significance. For the time being the excavation continues under the invaluable suggestions and help of Prof. Marinatos and with the assistance of excellent conservators and technicians.
