Abstract:
In Mesa Mani, near the village of Epano Bularii, the church of Saint Panteleimon — which has a simple vaulted ceiling and two apses — is still in evidence ( see N. B. Δρανδά- κη, "Αγιος Παντελεήμων Μπουλαριων, ΕΕΒΣ, vol. ΛΖ', ( 1969 - 1970 ), ρρ. 437- 458 ). Upon the apses ( 991/992 A.D. ) can be seen the paintings of two Martyrs, Panteleimon and Nikitas ( ? ) in an attitude of prayer (fig. 1 ).The orant Saints were thus frequently portrayed on the apses of Martyria in the Early Christian period. This form of apse decoration later spread from the Martyria to other churches. In Mesa Mani, an outlying corner of Greece, examples of this form of iconography occurred in popular frescoes at the end of the 10th century whereas normally from the 9th century onwards, the subject of the Virgin and Child was painted on the apses of Byzantine churches. The occurrence in Mesa Mani of this archaic form of iconography supports the author’s opinion that Mani had been converted to Christianity in the Early Christian period. It is likely that this practice of painting orant Saints on the apses spread from Mani to the nearby island Kythira.
