Abstract:
The hill that rises about 1 km north of the ruins of ancient Mantineia is identified as the Mycenaean acropolis that was called Ptolis in antiquity. The completion of the excavation of the temple on the west slope and the exploratory trenches around the hill have revealed that the hill was inhabited in the Neolithic period and throughout the Bronze Age. The temple on thewest slope was built on the site of a cult place at the end of the 8th or beginning of the 7th c. BC. It was probably dedicated to Artemis and had two building phases, the second of which extended from the third quarter of the 6th to the end of the 3rd c. BC. At the same time other sanctuaries were in use on the summit and higher parts of the hill.
