Abstract:
The finding of 24 sherds of bases of large and small coarse EH I-III and LH I-III pots with mat impressions in the excavations on Tsoungiza Hill in the Nemea valley has been proved very interesting for the study of basketry and matting in the prehistoric Aegean. The impressions of mats and baskets on the bases have a rectilinear or circular weave. The weaving techniques used at Tsoungiza were the same as those used on all the sites in the Argolid and Corinthia (Zygouries, Corinth, Keramidaki, Phlius, Makrovouni, Kefalari, Magoula, Talioti and Asine). The techniques are simpletwine, split twine and twill weaves (3/2 or 2/2) for the mats with a rectilinear weave (fig. 1). The wickerwork technique predominates in the impressions with a circular weave (fig. 1).The material used for the baskets and mats was gathered from the local flora (rushes, reed mace, sedges and feather grass for the mats and reeds and chaste- tree or willow withes for the baskets).Today the local people still use baskets and mats to some extent for agricultural purposes, such as picking grapes, and they buy them in Argos, which is the main production centre for a large region.
