Abstract:
Black spots, copper sulphide crystals, were observed on copper alloy artifacts in display and in storage at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. They are by-products of chemical attack by sulphur containing gaz pollutants.Knowing the possible sources of these pollutants, a systematic search was conducted in the Museum, which led to the attribution of the phenomenon to two materialsin vicinity to the copper alloy objects:a) Rubber bands used in packaging.b) Plaster of Paris used in gap filling. It is recommended that all materials for use in the display and storage of copper alloy objects are tested for sulphur and that conservators are consulted when planning the display, storage and packaging of antiquities.
