Abstract:
The author reports here the results of a small excavation made in 1977 on the east slope of the prehistoric hill of Amarynthos (known as Palaiokastro or Palaioekklesies or Palaiochoria or Gerani ), 2 km. east of Kato Vatheiasouth of the road to Aliveri. The site has been already recorded ( BSA 61 ( 1966 ), p. 64 - 66 ) and is of great importance for the study of Prehistoric Euboea. The material from the trial trenches and the survey exploration, dated from the Neolithic until the Byzantine period, indicates that the hill was the most important prehistoric settlement of the Eretrian plain. The excavation, carried out on an area of 9 X 3 m., revealed walls of Early Helladic buildings and part of a strong wall, probably a circuit wall (plan 1 ). The pottery found is dated mainly to Early Helladic II and III periods.κα άπό πολύ καλής ποιότητας μινυακά κύπελλα μαρτυρούν ακμή τού χώρου καί στή ΜΕ περίοδο. Θήβα, 1979 ΛΙΑΝΑ ΠΑΡΛΑΜΑFrom the many sherds the following shapes are recognised : slipped andpolished or urfirnis sauce - boats, bowls of several types, askoi, tankards and coarse big amphoras or jars. There are also sherds of mottled ware and very few with dark on light decoration. Some sherds from large pithoi with incised decoration are dated to Early Helladic I and II. A great number of sherds of scored ware was found, like those from Lefkandi. This discovery suggests the existence of that particular phase of the Early Helladic period ( known as Lefkandi I or Early Cycladic III ) also in Amarynthos. The discovery of some Middle Helladic sherds from grey - minyan goblets of excellent quality and from Late Helladic vases demonstrates the continuous occupation of the site during the Bronze Age.
