Finds of the neolithic period from Rhodes

Investigations to locate prehistoric sites in the Dodecanese commenced in 1977 and at present several dozen sites and settlements have been added to those already known. On Rhodes the Archangelos region, on the east side of the island, is of considerable interest. A large cave was discovered near the village of Archangelos and excavations were started there in 1979. They still continue. For the first time stratified pre-Mycenaean remains have been found on Rhodes.In two trenches which were opened Living Floors with traces of hearths, food residues and plenty of pottery were found. Between these are intrusive layers wich have been deposited at various times by rain water and the decomposition of the rocks of the cave (fig s. 4, 5, 7) In the upper strata there are early Mycenaean and Hellenistic sherds, while from a depth of 0.55 m. aΕΥΡΗΜΑΤΑ ΕΠΙΦΑΝΕΙΑΣ ΑΠΟ TONΌ όρμος του Γαλησσά βρίσκεται στά δυτικά παράλια τής Σύρου καί εχει σχήμα από βαθύ πέταλο. Ή νότια άκτή του ορ-clear prehistoric stratum is observed which seems to belong to the Early Bronze Age. The two lower floors may be characterised as Neolithic (fig. 5).The Neolithic pottery consists of unpainted, red with slip, black burnished, painted (light on dark) and pattern burnished (figs. 9- 15). The more recent pottery phase includes unpainted and black or grey sherds (figs. 16, 17). There are numerous stone vessels, shells, animal bones and seeds, aEven though it is early to draw conclusions, we are able to discern relations with Anatolia and the islands of the East Aegean. It is hoped that as excavations continue in this cave, as well as in others in the region, the nature of the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age culture of Rhodes will become clear. This may very well exhibit an independence like that of Crete or Cyprus during the same period.
