Abstract:
From the accidental discovery of sherds of Late Helladic III A-B around 1200 metres toward the East of the Mound of Marathon has arisen the indication on the part of Professor Marinates of a prehistoric settlement. In the ensuing trial excavations on the artificial hill ruins were discovered by the North Gate of the Early Helladic ( most probably ) fortified enclosure of the settlement ( thickness 2.30 m. )(fig. 1) and stone built dwellings, Geometric, probably, Late and Middle Helladic, a-polygonal Archaic circuit(fig. 2) rising upon the prehistoric ruins, as well as of a Christian basilica. The surface fill includes Late Helladic, Protogeometric, Geometric, Orientalizing, Pro to-Attic, Archaic, and some Classical sherds (figs. 3-4). On the level of the summit of the acropolis, the Middle Helladic appears at a depth of 1.70 m. and the Proto-Helladic at about 2.55 m.The excavation yielded fragments of a Kamares pot with a spout and of a matt painted pot with a representation of birds of Melian origin. Nearby was found a stone base bearing a dedication of epheboi (fig. 5), and the upper part of a marble triangular candelabra with a relief representation of torch bearers on each side. Though remains of Classical and Hellenistic dwellings have not so far been discovered, it seems evident that the ruins are of the deme of Tetrapolis of Marathon. Eschenburg and ProfessorW. Kendrick Pritchett site in this region the deme of Marathon.Tetrapolis was one of the twelve oldest cities of Attica ( Philochoros FG Hist. 328 F 94 and 109. Strab. 8, 7, 1, p. 383).Through the discovery of the prehistoric settlement the tradition is verified.
