Abstract:
This paper presents the findings of a research study concerning the life and the dramatic work of Napoleon Vallien, a theatre writer hardly known until recently. Of Italian or Maltese origin, Napoleon Vallien was born in 1853 on the island of Corfu. Between 1885 and 1896 Vallien was an active member of the “Dramatic Society of Corfu”, as an amateur actor and as stage director, while, in parallel, he produced, as a theater writer, six theatrical plays, some of which are presented on stage by this Society. In 1905, Vallien moved to the island of Samos, where he lived till 1913 for professional reasons. There he wrote another fifteen theatrical plays and eight of them have been published. He was also involved in the social life of the island. The second part of this paper is dedicated to the presentation of the dramatic analysis of his plays, grouped according to their content, in comedies, melodramas, bourgeois plays and patriotic plays. In this context, an evaluation of his dramatic work as a whole is presented, as well as his contribution in promoting the theatrical activity in Corfu and in Samos in turn of the century.
