Abstract:
Greek theatrical historiography is founded on the studies of two pioneer historians, Nikolaos Laskaris and Yiannis Sideris, whose personalities have left their mark on all related literary work and research. In parallel, a number of scholars and linguists study “Byzantine” and “Cretan” theatre from the point of view of their domain. Since 1974, the study of modern Greek theatre is enriched with theatrical analysis, while it has greatly benefited from the introduction of Theatre Studies in Greek Universities. Presently, thirty years later, the overall outcome is truly fruitful. The Greek theatrical bibliography presents us with a great number of independent studies as well as with scientific articles, setting up new research targets, aside with the older ones, and bringing into light new information, as is the case of the “Aegean theatre”. The evolution observed at the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st provides the ground for a retrospective bibliography of Modern Greek Theatre Studies. In this respect, a first processing of the available data is presented here, even though this bibliography is still a work in progress. This publication contains:1. A general history and bibliography of modern Greek theatre 2. The chronological classification of modern Greek theatre 3. Byzantine theatre 4. Cretan - Ionian - Aegean theatre 5. Theatre activity in the period from 1750 up to the establishment of modern Greek State (1829) 6. Theatre activity in the period from 1830 until the end of the 19th century.
