Abstract:
The Ephoreia of Antiquities in Euboea has undertaken the task of collecting all the archaeological material ( finds, plans, etc. ),' concerning the ancient town of Eretria, with the final aim of acquiring knowledge of the ancient town- planning, especially in the 4th and 3rd cent. B.C. A first attempt to plan the ancient Agora of the town is presented here ( f i g. 1 ). Excavations of the past few years have shown that the open space of the Agora was surrounded by grand Stoas ( the North Stoa, the East Stoa, and now the South Stoa ), while a main route crossed the west side. A complex of roads and private houses has been found to surround the Agora, the heart of the ancient city, where further excavations by the Service are in urgent need.
