Abstract:
This article deals with a byzantine lead seal that has been seized and taken to the Museum of Sparta. It very probably comes from the area of Laconia. Diameter 0.23 m. Obv : circular inscription : + Ké kOHTbJCU Δ 2TAU * , in center patriarchal cross potent on three steps. Border of dots. Rev. Inscription in four lines:P iNAAFCIbJR'Α'ΟΓΑΘ'$^ITITIaJNOIKÇ1AKUJNBorder of dots (fig. 1 ) .Three other lead seals with the same name have been indicated. The first one belongs to G. Orghidan Collection ( number 133 - fi g. 2 ) and has been published by V. Laurent in “ Documents de Sigillographie Byzantine. La Collection G. Orghidan” Paris, 1952, p. 75. The second one can be found in Athens Numismatic Museum Collection ( number 509 -fig. 3 ) and has been published by K. Konstantopoulos in “ Βυζαντιακά Μολυβδόβουλλα του έν Άθή-ναις Έθνικοϋ Νομισματικού Μουσείου ”, Άθήναι 1917, ρ. 136, and the third one has been published by W. Seibt in his book “ Die Byzantinischen Bleisiegel in Österreich, I Teil, Wien, 1978, p. 330 - 1 ( number 192 -fig. 4 ).The sources refer to the name Renta- kios or Rontakios. However there is no information about the person we are interested in who, according to his lead seal was a protospathaire epi ton ikiakon. The find is considered important, because it produces evidence for another member of the “ Rentakes ” family which consisted of two branches : the first is found in Athens and the other in the Peloponnese. Our lead seal, which can be dated to the end of 10th and the beginning of 11th century, resembles the one in the G. Orghidan Collection. So it could be assumed that these two lead seals belonged to the same person, who at first was simply protospathaire and later got the important office of “ epi ton ikiakon ”.For historical reasons a list of the persons who bear the name “ Renta- kios ” is cited in correspondence with the sources that give the information about them.
