Abstract:
Five inscribed fragments of white marble, transferred to the Epigraphical Museum many years ago, EM 2868 + 2990 + 3025 + 3036 + 3118, join together to form the base of a statue of Imperial times with three lines preserved (fig. 1 ).A (ύλον) Φλ(άβιον) Άρριανό[v] ύπατικόν φιλό[σο] φο[ν]The base is undoubtedly that of Arrian from Nicomedia of Bithynia, pupil of Epictetus and historian of Alexander the Great. He was consul suffectus; he obtained the citizenship of Athens as Παιανιεύς, and was archon at Athens in the year 145/6 A. D.The title φιλόσοφος in the inscription was attributed to Arrian by Dio Cassius who wrote his biography under the title Άρριανός ό φιλόσοφος, and it has been restored in an inscription from Corinth. The statue in honour of Arrian was erected probably by the city of Athens sometime after 145/6 A. D. when he was archon at Athens.
