Abstract:
1. Honorific inscription of Nero, from Athens (AD 23 (1968) : Ghronika, p. 70).In an inscription from Athens (fi g. 1) Nero is honoured as the «New Apollo» — boththe last words of deification as well as the name of the Emperor are scraped off owing to damnatio memoriae.Nero likened himself to Apollo and was portrayed in his statues as Apollo Kitharodos; he also had some coins minted in that type ( Seneca, Apoco- locynthosis 4. Suet., Nero 23, 25, 31, 53). This is the first time he is cited in inscriptions, too, as the « New Apollo».The honorific inscription must have been carved as a flattery to him shortly before his journey to Greece.2. Archaic dedicatory inscription to Aphrodite, from Gytheion (AD 23 (1968): Chronika, p. 153).The attribute « violet-crowned», ascribed to Aphrodite (Homer. Hymns 6, 18; Sol. 19, 4), is also encountered in an archaic inscription from the region of Gytheion, probably set on an altar and dated to c. 500 B.C. (fig. 2 ) -
