Abstract:
BOEOTIAN ORCHOMENOSIn my dissertation, to be published later under the title « Late Mycenaean, Helladic Hoards» I, publish and discuss some close finds of Late Mycenaean date, known as bronze founder’s hoards. They come from Mycenae, Athens (Acropolis), Anthedon in Boeotia and Tiryns ( the well - known Treasure ). I know from information kindly given to me by Prof. Marinatos, that years ago an analogous find came to light in Orchome- nos, somewhere in a well but nothing was known of it afterwards and the find itself had not been found or identified. I was not able to incorporate the Orchomenos bronze hoard into my thesis because at that time the find was unknown to me, as it was to every one. Happily enough I identified the hoard among other antiquities stored in the cupboard of a vitrine in the Museum of Chaironeia, and I began a systematic study of it, so that I hope to be able to publish it after a short time. Here I give only some introductory notes about the number of the objects, belonging to the hoard, and their categories in brief.102 objects belong to the find, which are listed as follows:A. Tools:1. Double Axes nos. 1-7 (fig. 1 ), 2. Flat Axes - Chisels nos. 8-17 (figs. 2 - 3), 3. Drill no. 18 ( f i g. 3 ), 4. Sickles nos. 19 - 36 ( fi g. 4 ), 5. Knives ( different kinds ) nos. 37 - 46.B. Weapons:1. Daggers (fragments only) nos. 47-61, 2. Swords (fragments only) nos. 62 - 65, 3. Spear-heads nos. 66 - 67 ( fi g. 5 ). smith’s abilities and techniques of the time, and a comparison with other hoards of the same period will be given as soon as possible, and then its chronological problems will be discussed. Here I may say only that this hoard, like the majority of those included in my thesis, dates to the closing years of the LH IIIB period or to the beginning of the following LH IIIC period.
