Fotos Politis’ early play, called «The ghost» was written in 1908. It was submitted the same year to a drama contest, conducted by the university of Athens, and was awarded the second prize. It is a dramatisation of the folk ballad «Song of the dead brother», a common practice at the time. Politis’ «Ghost» was thought (and commented upon) to have been influenced by Eftaliotis’ preceding play with the same title and subject. Politis’ play was unpublished until now, so the two plays could not be compared. They are really quite different. Politis’ «Ghost» has many symbolistic elements: moods, sentiments and presentiments, nature that seems to be an extension of the theatrical persons’ inner world. An obscure and mysterious fate appears as the moving force. At least the poor peasant heroes explain their calamities in this way, while the writer is not critical on their view. He takes only a little distance, and seems rather to agree with it.
