Abstract:
The purpose of this paper on an Attic column-krater that has twice appeared in Sotheby’s auction catalogues is twofold: firstly, to reidentify the vase painter of the work, and secondly to note certain peculiarities in the decoration of the crater that assign it to a rare category of this kind of vase. The Sotheby catalogues describe it as a work by the Providence Painter. The writer gives an analytical description of the shape of the vase and the representations on it, and on the basis of stylistic comparisons with works by the Oionocles Painter, like the amphora that once belonged to the Stettin Collection, amphora 12215 in Bern and amphora 1965.106 in Oxford, concludes that this vase was painted by the Oionocles Painter. The fact that the neck of the London Krater carries a representation instead of the black plant motifs that are usual at this point puts it into a rare category. The writer has assembled twelve Kraters of this category. On ten of them the scene on the neck is executed in the silhouette technique, like the London Krater, on one in the silhouette technique on a white ground and on one in the red figure technique. It is argued here that the representations on the necks of the vases were executed by a different artist from the one who painted the bodies, probably a painter specializing in the silhouette technique, whose hand we can recognize on several of the vases in this category.
