Abstract:
Subject of the present essay is the presentation of the reception of Victor Hugo in the theatre of the Greek communities in the Near East during the 19th century. The fact that the main and most important translators of Hugo’s theatrical work in the Greek language at that time are part amongst the intellectuals of the Greek communities of the Near East is taken into consideration. Moreover, the editions of the theatrical plays in Constantinople and Smyrna are being examined, as well as the theatrical representations, in chronological order, both by professional and amateur groups, and are being supplemented with summaries of the reviews from the press of the epoch.
