Abstract:
The 1971 excavation in the sanctuary of Ammon Zeus at Aphytis had very important results. In 1969 there was discovered the podium of a temple, identified with the temple of Ammon Zeus, according to a dedicative inscription found near the temple. In front of the temple was also discovered a later building (plan 1). In 1971 was discovered another later building, the altar, and another later altar (plan 1; figs. 1, 6, 7 ). In front of the temple were found many fragments of a doric marble entablature dated in the third century B.C., and a few fragments of a doric stone entablature dated in the fourth century B.C. There were also found terracotta rooftiles similar to these of the South Stoa in Corinth. According to the new finds the temple had a doric pteron, it was constructed from local stone ( cochyliatis ), and it was erected, probably, in the second half of the fourth century B.C. In the east later building were found two doric stone capitals (fig. 5 ), which belonged, probably, to the temple. In the third century B.C. a new marble entablature was erected. Duringthe Roman period ( 1st - 2nd century A.D. ) were constructed the two buildings and the little altar between them.South of the temple was discovered a sanctuary of Nymphs and Dionysos (figs. 10-11). There were founçl local hand-made vases (figs. 12,13), geometric vases (figs. 14, 15), and attic black-figure and red-figure vases (figs. 16- 18).West of this sanctuary, in a section, was discovered a part of another sanctuary, a Thesmophorion.Near the temple was found an inscribed base of a statuette with a dedicative inscription to Apollon Cana- straios (fig. 9 ).According to the finds of the 1971 excavation this sanctuary can be identified with the sanctuary of Dionysos, referred by Xenophon ( Hell. 5, 3, 13 ). The sanctuary of Dionysos was erected in the second half of the 8th century B.C. It testifies that Aphytis was founded in the second half of the 8th century B.C.During the byzantine period a chapel was erected above the sanctuary of Nymphs and Dionysos.
