Abstract:
Three walls were discovered in the course of resurfacing odos Athinas in Didymoteicho. They are outside the Byzantine fortifications of the Kastro, very close to its main gate and probably on top of the approach leading to it. They are in all probably defensive structures or a combination of walls and retaining walls connected with the main gate of the Kastro. Stratigraphic evidence suggests that the walls in odos Athinas are 14th c. constructions, but does not preclude a later date for them.Among the scanty glass finds from the excavation six glass bracelets probably of Late Byzantine date stand out. Much early 19th c. pottery was also found (tripodstilts bore the date 1825), coming from workshops of that period in the vicinity. Typical post-Byzantine pottery of excellent quality was found, deep red in colour; this pottery is usual in excavations at Didymoteicho. To the Late Byzantine period belong sherds of vessels with incised decoration and yellow (or more rarely green) glaze, and a very few sherds had added brown paint. There were also handles and rims from cooking vessels and transport vessels.A lamp-base and amphora fragment were the only Early Christian finds; they raise once again the question of whether or not there was systematic urban occupation of the hill of the Kastro during the Early Christian period.
