Abstract:
The gold necklace was handed over to the Ephoria by fishermen. It had been fished from the sea between the islands of Lesvos and Chios and the peninsula of Kara Burnu. After cleaning and conservation it weighed 98.978 gr. and measured 0.36 m. in length. It consists of 15 little open, boxshaped sockets joined to each other by links and hinges, and decorated with semiprecious stones. Semiprecious stones had also been inserted in the sockets, but only two had survived in place. It is dated to the 2nd-3rd c. AD by the few existing parallels to be found in jewellery, sculpture (grave reliefs from Palmyra) and painting (wall paintings and funerary portraits from Egypt). The provenance is probably Eastern, to judge from the iconographie data in Palmyra and Egypt.
