Abstract:
Object of the current research is the study of the particularly widespread in printed and in manuscript form (although not on stage) dialogical text of Greek pre-evolutionary theatre with the title Επάνοδος, ήτοι To φανάρι του A ιογένους (Return, namely The lantern of Diogenis). Initially, the play circulated anonymously, however, later on it was attributed to different writers and its authorship, as it is proven in the present study, dates probably from the first decade of the 19th century. Special emphasis is given to the investigation of the authorship and dating of the play and its incorporation in the literary context of the epoch, moreover to the structure, language and style of the text and also to the publications and reception of the play.It is an anti-Voltaire satire, faithful to the habit of main circles of the Patriarchate, to fight against the ideological overturnings of the French Revolution. Furthermore it has a strong moralistic character since it is directed against avarice and pride, a well-known traditional form of moralistic theatre.
