Abstract:
Following the steps of the human character of the greedy as a dramatic persona from Aristophane’s Pluto till Moliere’s and Goldoni’s Avaricious, the present essay focuses on three unknown theatrical plays of the 19th century of Greek playwriters from the Near East, “The Avaricious” of Alexander Georgiadis (Constantinople 1871), “The peculiar avaricious” of T. I. Triantafilli (Constantinople 1879) and the “Life and death of avaricious” of Ioannis Valavanis (Trapezounta 1881). The plot of the plays is being presented, their content analyzed and similarities and differences from Moliere’s “Avaricious” pointed out, while comparisons are drawn with three other Greek avaricious; “Exintavelonis” of Constantinos Ekonomou, “Sinani” of Dimitrios Vyzantinos and “Margaritis” of A. Μ. T. Vyzantios. In summary, the study attempts an approach to the apprehension of the problematic type of “avaricious” by the Greek writers of the 19th century, strongly or less influenced by the European dramaturgy.
