Abstract:
I. PlataeaSome 200 m. before entering ancient Plataea, in the field of Ioannis Makris, we excavated the badly preserved foundations of a rectangular building with three steps projecting to the North, i.e. to the ancient road, which still leads at present through the ancient town to the modern village. Some cist - graves, found near the very damaged ruins of the building, date to the 5th century B.C., except one, which contained several skeletons but no other finds. Topographically the site fits the description given by Pausa- nias, who records that the Altar of Zeus Eleutherios and the graves of the warriors fallen in the battle against the Persians lie close to the entrance of Plataea. An important inscription found in the area ( see above ) seems to support our views.II. Onchestos: The PoseidonionA thorough investigation has revealed the ruins of a poros building, tentatively identified as the temple of Poseidon, and the columned hall of an extensive building, partly in polygonal masonry, characterized as the Bou- leuterion, the assembly hall of the representatives of the Amphictyonia and the Boeotian League. Important inscriptions ( see above ) have confirmed the data of the excavation.III. TilphoussionNear the spring of the Nymph Til- phoussa, at the foot of the homonymous mountain, was the sacred grove andshrine of Apollo Tilphoussios, some fifty stadia from Haliartos, according to Pausanias. The great seer Teiresias died there and was buried near the spring. On the basis of these topographical indications, we made some trial trenches in what was thought to be the most appropriate place, i.e. round the little church of St. John the Baptist, near the village Soulinari, in Copais. Hundreds of human and animal figurines, bronze plates with relief decoration and few samples of broken pottery of the Classical period were unearthed. To the North of the church were uncovered the disturbed and partly destroyed foundations of the temple of Apollo. Among the few finds recovered in the temple, we mention some parts of the marble statue, possibly the statue of the god ( see above ). A stone base found near the church bears the name of the sculptor ΕΥΜΑΡΗΣ [ΘΗ]ΒΑΙΟΣIV. ItonionTo identify and discover the site and the monuments of the most important of all the Boeotian religious and political centres, i.e. the Itonion, had been a continuous and difficult task brought to success only after a long and painstaking topographical study of the area of Koroneia and the thorough study of traditional sources. Remains of three buildings, apparently of religious character, were unearthed ( see above ). The extension of the shrine is suggested by a HO[ROS] found some 200 m. West of the excavated buildings. V. OrchomenosAmong other important antiquities discovered in the eastern slope of the ancient acropolis, we mention here the discovery of the theatre of Orchomenos, lying to the N.E. of the Treasury of Minyas.Twelve rows of seats have been preserved , those of the proedria with relief decoration. To the east of the orchestra parts of the skene, inscriptions, marble pieces and other interesting finds have come to light. There are good reasons to justify a search foi the temple of the Charités in this direction, as already suggested by some hnds. Finally we only mention here the discovery and excavation of a monumental complex of the Mycenaean period, immediately West of the Church of Skripou. Rich finds ( pottery and, mainly, fine wall - paintings ) prove that this complex is the Mycenaean palace of Orchomenos. Accurate and extensive reports on these important discoveries will be published shortly.
