Abstract:
The Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities of Ioannina undertook in 1973 the preservation and cleaning of frescoes in the sanctuary and nave of the Ka- tholikon of the Mone Haghiou Niko- laou ton Philanthropenon on the Island of Ioannina. These operations, carried out in continuation of earlier works, have completed the restoration of the extensive painted decoration of the church, one of the most remarkable examples of religious painting after the Fall of Constantinople ( 16th century ).Operations have uncovered in the area of the vault some data of significance for the study of the morphological features and the painted decoration of the building.Cleaning of the frescoes has revealed the points where the walls had been cut on the upper part between the second and third ( from below ) band of compositions to allow construction of the present vaulted roof. This operation is assigned by an inscription found in the nave to the year 1542, when the building was renovated and wall - painted, as the inscription records· It became also apparent that this operation had caused damage at the terminal points of the paintings, which were then rather provisionally repaired by one of the painters who executed the decoration of the vault. On the basis of the above - mentioned evidence and the outline of the pediment of an earlier construction, clearly preserved on the outer surface of the East wall of the church, we are led to the following conclusions : I. Before the 1542 alteration, the church had been surely of the single-naved typewith wooden —not vaulted, as so far conjectured— roof. Perhaps the church had also a narthex at the time, similarly converted to a vaulted-roof type. II. Recent investigation has shown that the frescoes on the walls of the sanctuary, the nave up to the height of the formation of the vault, and the sanctuary apse, all executed by a single painter, are assignable to a date earlier than 1542. Thus, to the two painting phases of the church, already known from surviving inscriptions ( tympana, vault and narthex in 1542, pronarthexes in 1560 ), is added an earlier painting phase ( walls of the nave, walls and apse of the sanctuary ) which may be tentatively dated to the first decades of the 16th century. These earlier frescoes, distinguished by their high artistic quality and iconographi- cal themes, belong to the earliest painted decorations of the 16th century and are consequently of great interest for the study of Post - Byzantine religious painting.
