Abstract:
In the last season (1968) of the excavations of the acropolis of Sesklo (excavated by Chr. Tsountas in the first years of our century) some new and important details came to light: 1. The acropolis was fortified in the Middle Neolithic period, at least on the Western edge, where there is the principal entrance. 2. A general settlement plan suggests that it existed in that period because the walls of the houses and the streets have a direction parallel or perpendicular to the axis itself. 3. Around the megaron of the «period of Dimini» there was discovered an internal peribolos and traces of another elsewhere ; it seems certain therefore that here also the acropolis of the later Neolithic period was strengthened by successive periboloi, as at Dimini. 4. In the Notrheast section of the excavations the excavation was completed of a complex of houses, including the large house 50 (about 6.50x7.50 m. inside). The building 11-12 (see the plan 1) southwest of the «megaron» 7-8-9 was fully excavated. At the bottom of room 12 three small internal buttresses projected, near which were found many pots (figs. 1 - 2). The walls had a coating of clay and from several bits of evidence it is concluded that probably there existed another floor. The house was destroyed by fire at the end of Middle Neolithic.
