Abstract:
The existence of a great temple in the centre of Arta (the ancient Ambrakia) situated on King Pyrrhos Street, has been known since 1964. It was partly excavated in 1964 and in 1966. Last year’s excavation uncovered the West side and part of the North (fig. 1). It proved that dimensions of the temple are ca. 20.75x44 m.; it is peripteral and there is a pronaos and a deep sekos, at the end of which stands the base for the statue of the god. The temple is preserved up to the euthynteria and has since early Christian times served as a quarry. The massive foundations for the pteron and the walls of the sekos are 8.20 m. wide ; there was probably an inner colonnade. Most important is the discovery of a poros Doric capital (0.80x0.4 2 m. ; fig. 2), very similar to that of the second temple of Athena Pronaia at Delphi, ca. 500 B.C. (F.d.D. II, Le sanc tuaire d’Athéna Pronaia I, p. 10-11, f. 16-17). There are also several other architectural fragments of the same tufa stone (fig. 3 ). A terracotta antefix (H. 0,35 m.) has also been found, identical with one in Olympia (Olympia 2, pi. XCI, CXXII p. 198) and dated to the beginning of the fifth century B.C. (fig• 4).The continuation of the excavation will probably give further evidence for this temple unique for the whole of Epirus.
