Abstract:
I. EXCAVATIONS:a. Kouklia (Palaipaphos). The wall of Palaipaphos of the hill «Marcello» was investigated by the German archaeological mission. Here occurred the Persian siege of 497 B.C. The investigation and the ceramic finds discovered show that the fortress was abandoned in the 3rd century B.C. The research on the East section of the old city revealed rock-cut tombs of the Protogeometric and Protoarchaic periods. In the area «Eurete» three deposits containing pottery were studied, one of the late classical and early Hellenistic periods, the other two of pots and small finds belonging to the Mycenaean (LH III C 2, and 3,1) period.b. Kato Paphos. By the Archaeological Service of Cyprus a Hellenistic workshop for casting coins was discovered in New Paphos near the house of Dionysos.Three houses were discovered also of the late Hellenistic period, much destroyed however by later buildings above. The excavation was completed and the recovery of the theatre of late Roman times, found on the hill «Pharos». Its circle is discerned, and the orchestra and stage clarified as well as the size of the theatre.A large basilica (Limeniotissa) was excavated which has been known since 1938. It is a large basilica with three aisles, narthex and court, of which the floor was covered with mosaic and marble decoration. It was probably destroyed in 653 by the Arabs, when Paphos also was destroyed. The place was used by them for the installation of the army, and at that time were built the fortress and mosque. In the 8th century a smaller triple basilica was erected, which was destroyed probably by an earthquake a little after 1159. On this also was built another smaller temple. A large number of architectural members were found.c. Salamis. A series of rooms behind the North and South stoas (fig. 5) of the Palaestra and the Gymnasium, industrial constructions, were revealed, in which probably was the storeroom for oil for the needs of the young men exercising in the athletic training (oil deposit). Among the finds are reported statues from the decoration of the stoas of the Gymnasium and coins of the 4th century A.D., i.e. the period of the destruction of the Gymnasium.II. MUSEUMS:d. Larnaca. There is the prospect of opening shortly the new Museum to replace the old, situated in the Turkish section of the city.
