Abstract:
According to ancient tradition the oldest dwellers of Boeotia were Pelasgians and Leleges. The Pelasgians are to be identified with the earliest inhabitants of the Greek Peninsula, while the Leleges seem to have come from Asia Minor and the Cyclades.Evidence observed lately in Boeotia appears to corroborate a Cycladian influx during the Early Bronze Age.A cemetery dated by a Cycladic vase in the Early Cycladic period has been found in the NE bay of the lake Paralimne. The graves are oven-shaped with the entrance near the top and a small vestibule (dromos) in front. Very much alike are the tombs found some time ago on cap Manica in Euboea across Anthedon and close to the NE bay of Paralimne. Their furnishings are Early Cycladic (Papavasileiou, Περί τών έν Εύβοίςι αρχαίων τάφων, ρ. 2,8 f, PI. A, Γ, Δ, ΣΤ, I, Ιβ ). Similar graves have been lately observed halfway on the NE shore of Paralimne, resembling those found at the site «Likeri », on the shore of Ylike lake to theN. of Thebes (Prakt. Ak. Ath. 1931, 274 f), whereat vases akin to Early Cycladic pottery have lately been found. Moreover, Keramopoullos has dug near Thebes a tomb of apparently the same shape (Ephemeris 1910, 25 f, fig. 28). Therefore, the route leading through thenorthern part of the Euboean gulf and the Ylike and Paralimne lakes to Thebes must have been one of those followed by the Leleges (that is, the Cycladic people) on their way to Thebes.
