Abstract:
This is the summary of a paper read in the Acropolis’ Studies Center on the 8th March 1989, dedicated to the memory of Yannis Miliadis. Reference is made here to some of the most important coin hoards and stray finds which came to light during excavations since 1876: a) Stephanos Koumanoudis discovered then in the Asklepieion of Athens one of the most important gold byzantine hoards found in Greece (7th century A.D.). He uncovered also in the same site a hoard of 1880 bronze, mostly athenian, issues of the hellenistic period (New Style), b) In 1886 Panayiotis Kavvadias unearthed north west of the Erech- theion, together with the superb archaic Korai, a hoard of 63 silver Athenian coins which remain so far one of the most important hoard of the Athenian mint in the archaic period, c) The coins found by Yannis Miliadis during his excavations on the south slope of the Acropolis from 1955 to 1960 are also mentioned.
