Abstract:
In this study, we make an attempt to analyze Koumas’s views, based on the contrast “Dogmatism vs Scepticism”. These views are expressed by Koumas firstly in his “’Επιστολή προς Φραγκίσκον Μαύρον”, which he puts as a front page in the first volume of his work “Σύνταγμα Φιλοσοφίας” and secondly, in the part named “Προδιοίκησις ”, contained also in the same aforementioned work. From our analysis, we come to the following conclusions:1) Koumas has a very deep philosophical knowledge and is, therefore, in a position to judge the philosophical systems of “Dogmatism” and “Scepticism”.2) He introduces the “Critical Theory ” of Immanuel Kant, as a solution to the contrast.3) From the reading we did, we found that Koumas is “a methodical and systematic teacher of Philosophy”.4) The “eclecticism” that Koumas follows as a modus philosophandi, proves his in depth knowledge of the E
uropean philosophical currents of his time.5) Given that the particular work of Koumas under discussion is concerned with lectures’ notes, we can derive that the educational level of the famous School of Smyrne, where he taught Philosophy for a long time, was analogous to the corpus of knowledge held by the great teacher.
