Abstract:
Play, peculiar to man and to some animals, is a characteritic form of language use. A short and general overview of the playful use of language is given in this paper (with examples mostly from Common Modern Greek and selected bibliography), namely aspects studied; aim, causes and results of playful uses; playful uses in phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, writing, pragmatics, niveaux of language; different forms according to conscious mixing of language niveaux, text genres, witticisms (language humour), children games (cf word games); realisation of playful use and unconscious playful use.
