Abstract:
Of the twelve documents and letters published here, Nos. 1-4 are from the archive of Sotirios G. Asteriadis and Nos. 5-12 from the archive of Georgios Tsondos. They were written between 11 January 1876 and late 1911 or early 1912. Nos. 1 and 2 reveal that the Foreign Minister at the time, was fully aware of the Slavonic threat to the Greeks of Macedonia and Thrace in 1876-7. No. 3 concerns the economic problems the Greek state was facing, while in 1877 and No. 4 confirms that in 1910-11 the Greek economy was far from robust. No. 5 is Pavlos Melas’s last report to the governing council of the Macedonian Committee. Nos. 6, 7, and 8 are letters from Pavlos Mêlas, Zaharias Papadas, and Natalia Mela to Georgios Tsondos. No. 9 is a record of an agreement concluded in 1904 between Georgios Tsondos and the inhabitants of Loshnitsa (Yermas) for maintaining guards in the village and serving the needs of the Greek forces. No. 10 is the plan of action for the projected Panmacedonian Association. No. 11 is a circular from the Supreme National Centre of the Greek-Ma- cedonian Defence to the leaders of the forces, the chieftains, and the national committees of western Macedonia and Epirus. No. 12 is a handbill summoning the people of Athens and Piraeus to attend a mass rally in Varvakiou Square on 16 March 1908 to protest against the suffering inflicted on the Macedonian Greeks by the Bulgarian komitadjis.
